A landslide occurred at Sumikawa hot-spa in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture on May 11, 1997. The landslide destroyed 9 houses of Sumikawa hotspa and the debris avalanche changed from landslide hit Akakawa hotspa and national road No.341. Since the Kazuno city office issued the refuge advice, the human damage was not generated.<BR>This study based on field survey and aerial photograph interpretation. The Sumikawa landslide located between the Yakeyama volcano and the Hachimantai volcano. This area is a large geothermal field, and distributedmany large-scale landslides. The Sumikawa landslide occurred just on the same area of pre-existinglandslide topography, it was shown by the landslide topography map published by National Research Center forDisaster Prevention in 1984. The map also shows the Sumikawa landslide was partial movement of a large-scale landslide on Yakeyama Volcano. The Sumikawa landslide, 350 m in width and 650 m in length, is a caprock type landslide and its movement is estimated at squeeze type. The long-term unstabilization process of the landslide is originated in hydrothermal alteration by fumarolic gas. And a trigger of the landslide is the rise of groundwater level by snow melting water and heavy rainfall. The landslide topography maps point distribution of past landslides and are effective data for the slope disaster prevention.
