Abstract
This is the report on wooden Nishiogikubo collective housing built in March, 1924 by Dojun-kai (Corporative Association of Dojun-kai) and those who lived there. The report focuses on chronological changes of attitudes on housing seen among dwellers; how they came to move from the rented houses to their own houses and how they expanded and reconstructed their houses. And with their attitudes toward expansion and reconstruction, some characteristics common to all were found. One of them is that dwellers seemed to be interested more in increasing the number of rooms than in expanding each room. This is because the number of rooms given to a dweller at the beginning was small, two or three. Secondly, dwellers tended to expand their rooms north-ward. The reason for this is considered to be not the taste of dwellers but the geographical features of the site. In this report, opinions of dwellers are dealt with not merely statically but rather individually, so that the dwellers' attitudes toward their life style might appear more clearly. The case studies thus conducted with ten dwellers show that each dweller had his own way of thinking about housing. In the report we tried our best to present the views as clearly as possible by using plans. For visual understanding of reconstruction plans, it is recommended to refer to the plans given in the report itself.
