Description
This report clarifies that the growth of early modern resort areas at Karuizawa in Japan consists of three periods. At first, the resort grew naturally with foreigners cottages (1886-1915). During the next period, some companies developed residential areas with cottages for Japanese habitants (1916-1929). Finally, the whole area of resort extended to Minamigaoka (1930-1945). For the analysis, many maps in those days are used. And it would be also clarified that western cottages become more popular at Karuizawa after America-ya and W. M. Vories & Company Architects positively participated in developments at the second period.
