Abstract

Although there are many reports on the symbiotic growth relating with microorganisms, little knowledge has been known about the so-called syntrophic growth between Lactobacillus arabinosus and Streptococcus faecalis.
In this reports, the present authors have made some attempts to interpret the mechanism of syntrophism among lactic acid bacteria which are usually used as strains for microbioassay, and studied on the growth factors in the syntrophic culture medium.
The syntrophism between L. arabinosus 17-5 (ATCC 8014) and Sc. faecalis R (ATCC 8043) Was demonstrated in a synthetic medium lacking both phenylalanine and folic acid; these are required by L. arabinosus and Sc. faecalis, respectively. Establishment of this syntrophic growth was interpreted as follow: L. arabinosus produced a factor showing an activity as folic acid for Sc. faecalis, and Sc. faecalis formed a factor having an activity as phenylalanine for L. arabinosus. These factors were heat stable and secreted to the growth medium.
