Abstract
A new disease of chrysanthemum caused by Peronospora danica GAUMANN. Soichi SAKAGUCHI, Tadayuki IWASA, Toshikatsu NISHINo and Yoshinari NONAKA (Naga-saki Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Isahaya, Nagasaki 854. Nagasaki Plant Protection Office, Nagasaki 852. Nagasaki Agricultural Extension Service Station, Nagasaki 852)<BR>A fungal disease was observed on lower leaves of chrysanthemum grown under vinyl house conditions in the spring of 1979 in Nagasaki, Japan. Conidiophores and conidia suggestive of Peronospora sp. were found on chlorotic or yellowish brown leaves of variety "Koen". As the weather became warm, active development of Peronospora sp. stopped. Conidiophores dicotomously branched without subapical enlargements, about 378μm high; conidia ovate or ellipsoidal, 30.0-41.3×18.8-26.3μm(mean34.0×22.4μm) in size and germinate by a germ tube from the side; oospore unknown. According to the key proposed by Ito (1936), the fungus was identified as Peronospora danica GAUMANN. This appears to be the first record of downey mildew on cultivated chry-santhemums in Japan.
