Abstract

A resident survey was conducted for all households living in the specific resident block in Sapporo City. Through classifying the households by the age of the youngest child, the library utilization behavior of a family unit was analyzed. The transition of a library utilization style according to the progress of household's life stages as well as the effects of the car availability on the choice of utilized libraries are clarified. Large-sized libraries in distant places were used as "lending library" in the same way as nearby medium-sized and small libraries by the user segments of "married couple" and "parent and children". The conventional hierarchical library-developing technique based on the travel distance has become incompatible with the family users who jointly use the library and traveling long distance by the car.
