To What Extent Are Hierarchy in BSH/NDLSH and That in NDC Coincident?

Description

The extent to which hierarchy in BSH/NDLSH and that in NDC are coincident was investigated. BSH 4th ed. and NDLSH are lists of subject headings, while NDC 9th ed. is a classification schedule, both of which are used in Japan. BSH/NDLSH and NDC are linked with each other through the assignment of NDC classification numbers to individual subject headings. With such correspondence between BSH/NDLSH and NDC, whether hierarchical relationships among terms are coincident with hierarchical relationships among items in the classification schedule, and vice versa, were examined and the total number of disagreements of hierarchies was counted. The results showed that such hierarchical disagreements occurred in 25% to 35% of NDC items when considering the correspondence from BSH/NDLSH to NDC. The results also showed that such disagreements occurred in 20% to 45% of BSH/NDLSH terms when considering the correspondence from NDC to BSH/NDLSH, although the percentage depends on the treatment of cases where NDC items have no corresponding BSH/NDLSH terms. Likewise, matching within three hierarchical layers reduced the number of hierarchical disagreements, whereas a normalized NDC, which represents its intrinsic hierarchy in a more proper way, did not help to reduce the significant number of disagreements. Incorporating related items defined in NDC and a restricted inheritance of terms in BSH/NDLSH were also examined, and the former was found to have an effect.
