Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop anaerobic digestion of high-loading glycerol. In our previous study, anaerobic fermentation adding slight amounts of glucose as a fermentation promoter was found to convert high-loading glycerol into hydrogen, 1,3-propanediol and organic acids. In the present study, glycerol digestion based on this novel process by fed-batch culture was examined. Adding the substrate solution following removal of the culture solution, glycerol digestion and production of hydrogen, 1,3-propanediol and organic acidcontinued for a long time (more than 6months) . These results suggest that anaerobic digestion was promoted by removal of fermentative productions. The average of glycerol digestion was 49%, and the production yield of hydrogen, 1,3-propanediol and organic acid per digested glycerol was 0.42mol/mol-glycerol, 0.47mol/mol-glycerol, 0.26mol/mol-glycerol, respectively.
