Wave Propagation Characteristics of Iron Conductors in an Intelligent Building

Search this article

Abstract

Wave propagation characteristics of iron conductors were measured when an impulse voltage was applied. The measured results show that the iron permeability causes no significant effect on the wave propagation characteristic and thus the iron conductor is represented by an aluminum conductor. The surge impedances are noticeably different between vertically and horizontally arranged conductors. An equivalent cylindrical conductor to L-, T- and square-shape iron conductors has been proposed, where the outer and inner radii are evaluated from the circumscribed and inscribed circles of the original conductor. An EMTP simulation by adopting the equivalent cylindrical conductor gives a reasonable result compared with the measured result. Also, an induced voltage to a closed loop is measured for various terminating conditions, and an EMTP simulation shows a satisfactory accuracy.
