Abstract

We propose an interactive painting technique that can paint pictures using 3D shaped brushes. Artists can design and edit 3D shapes of brushes. Artists can create their characteristic brushes by editing the shape and its deformation behavior. Artists can model the shape of each brush just by sketching its two-dimensional three-plane drawing. Thus, they can create various shaped brushes including general drawing pens easily. In addition, we can also define deformation behavior of each brush which collided with a canvas. Each brush is bent, crushed flat and sinks itself into the canvas according to the brush’s attributes. Artists can express materials of each brush artificially by setting the parameters of each attribute. This paper describes algorithms for modeling 3D shape of each brush, for defining its deformation behavior, and for drawing strokes on a canvas. In addition, we developed a raster graphics editor, PETICA, based on our method. We conducted evaluation experiments to several artists using PETICA. According to the artists, the proposed PETICA system is nice to paint pictures with since the users can make original brushes by designing their shapes and characteristics.
