Abstract

The effect of an inlet anti-swirl plate (IASP) on a centrifugal compressor performance of an automotive turbocharger was investigated. The experimental results showed that the surge limit flow rate was reduced by approximately 20 to 35% with the IASP under almost all of the operating conditions while maintaining the same level of maximum efficiency and choke flow rate as that of the compressor without the IASP. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses clarified that the IASP had an effect of reducing the inlet pre whirl. This leads to keeping stable compressor characteristics under lower flow rate condition.
