Abstract
Fukuoka Stroke Registry (FSR) is a multicenter hospital-based registry. In this cohort, we are collecting the data of acute stroke patients. As a substudy of FSR, we are doing research for biomarkers in ischemic stroke (REBIOS). In the peri-infarct area, a variety of responses such as inflammation, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis occur. In these responses, a lot of proteins are released, some of which may go into the blood stream due to blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown. Newly developed techniques including proteomics have enabled us to explore such biomarkers. For example, we have shown that plasma levels of S100A12 on admission in patients with ischemic stroke are higher than those in age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects, and that high plasma S100A12 levels on admission are associated with a poor functional outcome in the patients. We also have shown that RANTES, a chemokine, is produced from neurons after ischemic stroke and may have a potential to protect neurons directly or indirectly through the production of neurotrophic factors in peri-infarct areas. These biomarkers may be useful for investigation of pathophysiology of cerebral infarction.
