We have newly developed the classification of the advancement degree of spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) and the simple evaluation method for the balance ability of the patient, and have examined the quality of them for practical application. Subjects are eighteen SCD patients (4 males and 14 females, average age 56.3±12.6). In the balance test, points obtained nearly accorded with the advancement degree of SCD, and the deviation of them between the static and dynamic balance tests was within ±2. These will enable us to compare characteristics of balance ability of the SCD patients. In addition, comparative study between the maximum walking speed and steps necessary for a certain distance made it obvious that the maximum walking speed depends on a stride not on cadence of SCD patients. From these results, it was considered that the classification of the advancement degree of SCD and the balance test might be useful in physical therpay for SCD patient.
