Description
The purpose of the present study was to synthesize recent research findings concerning early symbolic play, from the viewpoint of early intervention and language development. The review focuses especially on cognitive development related to early symbolic play, from the emergence of conventional object use to role play. The development of children's showing their self to others is related to early pretense. The combinatorial ability that is observed in symbolic play with sequences develops from children's relating as agents to acts and extensions of meaning. Role play develops in parallel with children's sharing symbolization with their play partners and flexibility of object substitution in symbolic play. This affects the development of children's theory of mind and their language development. The organization of children's daily experience and their internalization of their experiences relate to the capacity for planning and forecasting; these are enhanced in early symbolic play. Children's symbolic play is related to their intentionality to the reality of their life. This intentionality is connected to sharing symbolization with others and to flexibility of object substitution in symbolic play, which are, in turn, related to the acquisition of words referring to mental states.
