Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to facilitate social interaction skills in an adolescent with autism (CA:14-5, MA:5-2, IQ:35), through introducing special training in a leisure activity setting, i.e., karaoke. Before the training, karaoke activities were chained on the basis of a task analysis of karaoke skills. After that, in the structured setting, the subject was first trained until he was able to acquire the skills for performing karaoke activity. Then, using interruptions of the ongoing sequences of karaoke skills (i.e., a behavior chain interruption strategy), his interpersonal social interaction behavior was trained. The results were as follows: (1) The frequency of initiations of the chain by the subject increased after the completion of training. (2) The number of turns taken increased, and the duration of interactions between the adolescent and other participants was extended. (3) In probe sessions, the social interaction skills generalized to non-training settings and to persons who were not trainers. The effectiveness of this training program for promoting spontaneity and generalization in an adolescent's social interactions was discussed.
