Abstract

The development of a speech and auditory training program is important in order to explain the cause of individual differences in the speech discrimination of people with hearing impairments. The purpose of the present experiment is to test how formant frequency discrimination by people with hearing impairments is influenced by speech discrimination. Participants were 12 individuals with sensorineural hearing impairment and 9 individuals with no hearing impairments. By generating a processed stimulus through artificially modifying a standard stimulus, we attempted to measure formant frequency discrimination in conditions approximating real speech perception. The results indicated a high correlation between formant frequency discrimination and speech discrimination. This indicates the importance of formant frequency discrimination in speech perception. The results also showed that formant frequency discrimination is not consistent with hearing threshold level.
