Abstract
The present manuscript discusses, from the point of view of the verbal regulation function of behavior (Luria method), the development and disturbance of self motor regulation in preschool children and school age children with developmental disabilities, following instructions by the teacher. The conclusions were as follows: (1) The verbal regulation function of behavior in preschool children develops based on the development of both the planning function and fine motor regulation function. (2) The developmental spurt occurs during the time the child is 4.5-5 yrs. old. (3) Preschool children do not always go through the outer speech regulation step. (4) In children with Down syndrome and/or mental retardation, the development of verbal regulation of behavior parallels their mental age. (5) Autistic children need simple, immediate instruction by others, because their verbal regulation function of behavior is poor, and it is independent of their mental age.
