Description

To investigate social support (perceived support and enacted support) as a moderator of stress in mothers of children with disabilities, the responses on questionnaire completed by 239 mothers of children with disabilities were compared with those of 171 mothers of children without disabilities. The results were as follows: (1) Marital intimacy as perceived support had moderated the life event stress of mothers of children with disabilities. (2) Care and treatment support had buffered the stress from daily hassles. (3) The neighborhood as perceived support also contributed to the mental health of mothers of children with disabilities. The results for enacted support showed that supportive suggestions by others could lower the level of reported mental health in mothers who say they have high stress. Mothers who perceived their neighborhood as an important social support coped with stress best and stayed in better mental health. In future research, it will be necessary to consider various factors that may clarify the effects of social support.
