Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the phonological aspect of linguistic processing in Japanese children who stutter. Wingate (1988) hypothesized that the transition from the onsets to the core vowels affects the occurrence of stuttering in English. In contrast, Shimamori and Ito (2007, 2008, 2009 [in Japanese]) suggested that the transition from the initial core vowels to the following segments affects the frequency of stuttering in Japanese. The present study investigated whether the transition from the onsets to the core vowels affects the frequency of stuttering in Japanese, in addition to doing so in English. The participants were 30 elementary school children (6 to 12 years old) who stuttered. Two types of monosyllabic stimuli were used: (a) ones with a transition from the onsets to the core vowels (e.g., /ka/), and (b) ones without such a transition (e.g., /a/). A naming task and a reading task were used. The frequency of stuttering on both tasks was not significantly different between the stimuli with and without a transition from the onsets to the core vowels. This result suggests that the transition from the onsets to the core vowels does not affect the frequency of stuttering in Japanese, and that the position in syllable structure where the frequency of stuttering is affected is different in Japanese from that in English.
