Abstract

Developmental biases, weakness in physical movements, and poor posture are frequently observed in children with developmental disabilities. The present review of studies of physical movements and posture of children with pervasive developmental disorders, ADHD, dyslexia, and developmental coordination disorder indicated that children with developmental disabilities have difficulties in postural stability, balance control, coordination, and fine and gross motor ability, as well as other related problems. Furthermore, each type of developmental disability has characteristic difficulties in movement and posture. Studies of the relation between physical movement and posture, on the one hand, and cognition, behavior, and emotion on the other, were also reviewed. Finally, the present report introduces 3 methods for approaching the physical movement and posture of children with developmental disabilities. An assessment of the physical movement and posture of children with developmental disabilities can be useful when they are being evaluated. Also, an educational-therapeutic approach is suggested for difficulties in physical movement and posture of children with developmental disabilities.
