Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to measure characteristics of the self-esteem, social skills, and stress response of school refusers, in order to investigate the relationship of their self-esteem and social skills to their stress response. Participants were 21 junior-high-school age school refusers attending special schools for children with health challenges or special adjustment guidance classes, and 95 students attending a public junior high school. All participants completed a questionnaire. The results suggest that the school-refusing group were less skillful than the public school students at making relationships with friends. In the school-refusing group, their lower level of skill at making and maintaining relations with friends appeared to have an effect on their stress response. The public school students' self-esteem, total social skillls, skills at maintaining relations with friends, and assertion skills appeared to be related to their stress response.
