Patterns in Verb Production by Children With Moderate Hearing Impairments

The purpose of the present study was to examine some features of verb usage by children with moderate hearing impairments. Participants in the study were 27 elementary school children with moderate hearing impairments (9 each in the first and second grades, third and fourth grades, and fifth and sixth grades), and 208 individuals without hearing impairments: 141 elementery school children (45 in the first and second grades, 50 in the third and fourth grades, and 46 in the fifth and sixth grades) and 67 adults. Verbs with similar meanings were classified into 2 groups: general verbs, which could be used for general purposes (e.g., move), and specific verbs, which could be used for the specific purpose (e.g., jump). A comparison of the number and ratio of special verbs to general verbs provided the following results: (1) It was difficult for the children with moderate hearing impairments to use specific verbs that were suitable to the context; instead, they tended to use general verbs in such situations. (2) There were some similarities in the way that the children with moderate hearing impairments and the participants without hearing impairments used specific verbs. (3) The children with moderate hearing impairments used few specific verbs in some tasks for which the participants without hearing impairments used many specific verbs. Furthermore, the children with moderate hearing impairments selected verbs in a different way from the other participants in the study.
