In the preceding report, the author tried to know how iron oxides behaved in the methanolic bromine dissolution procedure, and ferrous oxide coexisting with metallic iron and ferric oxide in ores was found to be unaffected with a cold 10% methanolic bromine solution. From the result, a procedure for the determination of ferrous and ferric oxides in high sulfur iron ores has been presented as follows: 0.2 to 0.5g ore sample of approximately 150 mesh is stirred in 20 mlof methyl alcohol containing 2 ml of bromine for an hour at room temperature, and the solution is filtered through asbestos in a Gooch crucible, the solid being washed thoroughly with methyl alcohol and thereafter with water to remove the alcohol. The ore residue is digested with 40 mlof hydrochloric acid (1 + 1) for 40 minutes, passing carbon dioxide in it, and ferrous iron content in the digested solution is determined by means of permanganate titration. This titrated solution is heated to almost dryness and extracted with 20ml of hydrochloric acid (1 +1), and the total iron content in the solution is determined permanganometrically, after treated with solutions of stannous chloride, saturated mercuric chloride and manganese sulfate. Iron content of the sample as ferric oxide is obtained as the difference between the total iron and the ferrous one. The ferrous and ferric iron thus obtained held the ratio 2Fe(II)/Fe(III) =1 between them without an exception on the three magnetite ores taken as the samples.
