A rapid, sensitive and selective method has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of micro amounts of beryllium in zinc base alloy. The method is based on the absorptiometric measurement of the stable blue-violet color formed by the reaction of beryllium with beryllon III in an alkaline solution (pH 1011). At 525 mμ, Beer's law is obeyed for 015 μg of beryllium in 50 ml.<BR>The sensitivity and molar absorptivity at 525 mμ are 0.00043μg beryllium/cm3 and 2.0×104, respectively. Large amounts of zinc, aluminum and copper are eliminated by masking them with EDTA and potassium cyanide. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of beryllium(10-3%) in various zinc base alloys.
