In a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame, strontium is partially ionized to give a calibration curve which bends toward the absorbance axis. The apparent ionization degree was determined to be 82% for 2 ppm of strontium by measuring the absorbance at 4607 Å atom resonance line and 4077 Å ion resonance line. In the presence of a large amount of potassium chloride the ionization of strontium is suppressed and a straight calibration curve was obtained for 0.21.0 ppm of strontium. Co-existent elements having an ionization potential value smaller than about 6.8 eV enhanced the strontium absorption, but this enhancement apparently disappeared on addition of potassium chloride. The above-mentioned enhancement, therefore, could be explained in terms of the suppression of the ionization of strontium. Almost all elements except silicon and mineral acids gave no interference when the absorption measurement was carried out with added potassium chloride.<BR>On the basis of this observation, strontium in Portland cement, cathode oxide for vacuum tube, animal bone and milk powder was determined by measuring the absorbance at 4607 Å in the presence of 2000 ppm of potassium and the results were in good agreement with those obtained by other methods.
