Limestones and calcareous sinters often contain small amounts of fluorine. To determine spectrochemically the fluorine contents of these samples, a visual method was applied, in which use was made of a band spectrum of CaF in the visible region.<BR>The outer fringe of an arc column was observed with a spectroscope of constant deviation type. A series of standards for fluoride was prepared by diluting pure calcium fluoride with pure precipitated calcium carbonate.Optimum conditions for the visual method were investigated and a suitable procedure was established as follows: The sample was excited with a D. C. arc of 10A from 100V D.C.source, and the time of duration of the CaF band head at 5291Å(green) in the field of the telescope was measured. A calibration curve could be drawn for the range between 0.001 and 0.1% fluorine, within which the curve was approximately linear. Thus, within experimental errors of ±20% can be determined the fluorine contents of natural calcium carbonates.<BR>Small amounts of magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon gave no interference. Alkali metals gave low values. Large amount of iron impaired the test, the sample being often spattered on arcing.
