説明

A method of determination of phosphate and sulfate ions in a mixed sample containing phosphate and sulfate ions has been investigated. Namely, a weakly acidic sample solution is treated with ammonium nitrate and magnesium nitrate, made alkaline with ammonia, and the phosphate ion is precipitated as magnesium-ammonium phosphate. The precipitate is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and the magnesium ion is titrated with a standard solution of EDTA using EBT as an indicator for the determination of phosphate ion. The filtrate after separation of the precipitate is heated to drive off ammonia, the residue is made acidic with acetic acid, and the sulfate ion is precipitated as lead sulfate by the addition of alcohol (to 2530%) and lead nitrate in a definite excess. The excess of lead ion at pH 5 is titrated with a standard solution of EDTA using Xylenol Orange as an indicator. In this method, a mixed sample containing 150 mg each of phosphate and sulfate ions can be determined with an error of O.10.3%.
