0.5g of alumina is mixed with 1g of boric acid in an agate mortar and the mixture is transferred to a platinum crucible. The mortar is rubbed with two 0.2g portions of boric acid, which are combined to the main portion. The crucible is covered and heated slowly until effervescence has ceased, and finally ignited for 5 minutes. After cooling, the sintered mass is heated with 100 ml hot water containing several drops of hydrochloric acid. The liquid is neutralized with ammonia water using methyl red as an indicator and is filtered. The residue is air-dried and examined by X-ray diffraction analysis for alumina content and by emission spectrum for sodium. The two residues from the different samples as listed on Table I contain less than 20% alumina and traces of sodium when they are intimately mixed with boric acid, while one residue contains 36% alumina and more than trace of sodium when it is not. The method for determination of alkalies. in alumina seems, therefore, to be satisfactory when a sample is intimately mixed with boric acid.
