Description

Application of ion-exchange paper and filter paper disks for X-ray spectrometry was developed to provide a simple and rapid analytical method for gold and silver in copper metal.<BR>The sample is dissolved in aqua regia. Gold and silver are separated from the chloride-nitrate solution on an ion-exchange paper disk (φ=18 mm, Amberlite SB-2) by a simple filtering process. For samples containing more than 100 μg of silver, silver chloride is filtered off on a filter paper disk (φ=18 mm), and then gold is separated from the filtrate on an ion-exchange paper disk as above. The fluorescent X-ray analyses are carried out for both metals on these paper disks. The precision of the determination was as follows : σ=12μg for less than 100 μg of each metal and σ_??_16 μg for 1001000 μg of silver. Filtering technique, number of filtration, and volume and composition of the solution were studied for nearly complete recovery of gold and silver. The effect of co-exsisting elements was also studied for the fluorescent X-ray analysis. A discussion was given for the mechanism of the collection of silver on ion-exchange paper and filter paper.
