A combined use of vanadyl sulfate and hydroxylamine as a reducing agent in the colorimetric estimation of iron by dimethylglyoxime gives greater light absorption and stable coloration over 1 hour. In this method, iron solution containing 50-200 γ Fe is treated with 5ml 10% hydroxylamine solution, heated for 5minutes at 60-80°C cooled, 3-4ml each of 40% Rochelle salt and 1% alcoholic solution of dimethylglyoxime, and 2ml N/50 vanadyl sulfate are added, made alkaline with 8ml concentrated ammonium hydroxide, made up to 100ml with water and colorimetric estimation is made after standing for 15minutes. The presence of 0.2mg Co, 0.5mg Pb, Mn and Cr, 1mg Sn, 10mgmg and Sb, 20mg Ti, 50mg Al, and up to 100mg Zn are found to be nondisturbing. The presence of Cu is harmful but it can be removed by shaking with liquid zinc amalgam. This method gives satisfactory, result for application on alloy samples.
