説明
Intercropping legumes with cereals is an important feature of many cropping systems in the drylands of Indonesia such as Southeast Sulawesi. Intercropping experiments were conducted at Tiworo watershed area of Southeast Sulawesi from November 1999 to October 2000 in a split plot design with two replications. Sub plots had three intercropping systems: maize, peanut and mungbean planted at the same time and delayed planting of peanut and mungbean both 14 and 28 days after maize. <br> In the wet season, the intercepted radiation use efficiency of maize was highest when maize and peanut were planted at the same time, followed by peanut and mungbean in that order when the planting was delayed to 14 days after maize. In the dry season, the efficiency of intercepted radiation use by maize and peanut, when planted together at the same time, was lower. Highest LERs of 1.63 and 1.62 were reached, in both seasons, by the maize/peanut intercrop planted at the same time. The experiment also revealed that in both seasons, water use efficiency of applied intercropping systems was highest for the maize crop when crops were planted at the same time, but supplementary irrigation remained necessary.
