The recirculation rate was measured using a noninvasive continuous optical hematocrit monitor (CRIT-LINE) to investigate the relationship to the puncture patterns of internal AV fistula. The subjects were 67 patients (74 shunts) on maintenance hemodialysis via internal AV fistula at our hospital and related institutions. The pattern of access to the internal AV fistula was classified as type I (the same blood vessel was punctured on both the arterial and venous sides of the circuit), type Y (different blood vessels with a Y-shaped bifurcation were punctured), and type H (different blood vessels without any connection were punctured). Then the recirculation rate through the internal AV fistula was measured using the CRIT-LINE. A recirculation rate>10% was seen in 12 internal AV fistulas (16%). The factors that affected the recirculation rate were analyzed. It was revealed that the recirculation rate was significantly greater in patients with longer duration of hemodialysis (≥10 years) than in those with shorter duration of hemodialysis (<10 years).
