The incidence of complications and causes of death in uremic diabetics with hemodialysis (HD) (128 patients undergoing hemodialysis, 112 patients who died) for the past 5 years in 30 institutions in Hyogo Prefecture were investigated. The clinical characteristics of patients receiving HD for over 5 years were also studied. At the time of initiation of HD the serum creatinine level of the long-term dialysis patients (over 5 years) was slightly higher than that of the patients with HD under 5 years.<br>Among the many complications in the patients undergoing dialysis, the incidence of hypertension was most frequent, followed by heart failure, coronary insufficiency and visual disturbances.<br>In the dead patients heart failure was most frequent followed by cerebrovascular disturbances, infection, gastrointestinal bleeding and cachexia as a cause of death.<br>The survival of the patients on insulin therapy was significantly shorter than that of the patients not receiving insulin.<br>From the olinical analysis of the dead patients, no correlation between the age at the initiation of HD and survival was found.
