Endotoxin preparations obtained from three oral bacteria, Bacteroides gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Haemophilus actinomycetemcomitans were investigated as to polyclonal Bcell activation (PBA), colony stimulating factor (CSF) production in both normal and tolerant mice induced by E. coli LPS, and Limulus activity observed with Endospecy (endotoxin specific) reagent. In the spleen cells of C3H/HeN mice, all preparations elicited PBA, but the activities were lower than the reference LPS of Salmonella abortus equi; the activities were in the order of Haemophilus actinomy-cetemcomitans LPS, Fusobacterium nucleatum LPS, and Bacteroides gingivalis LPS; PBA's observed in both Fusobacterium nucleatum LPS and Bacteroides gingivalis LPS were inhibited only partially by polymyxin B. Even in C3H/HeJ mice, Bacterides gingivalis LPS and Fusobacterium nucleatum LPS elicited PBA; the PBA of Bacteroides gingivalis LPS was inhibited polymyxin B, while that of Fusobacterium nucleatum LPS was hardly inhibited by polymixin B. CSF-productions of three LPS's in both normal and tolerant mice were not essentially different from that of Salmonella abortus equi LPS. Limulus activities of three LPS's were nearly similar to that of another reference E. coli LPS.
