抄録

To study the influence of swallowing on the rhythmical chewing of rabbits, jaw movement trajectories and masticatory muscle activities were recorded during pellet chewing. Five types of swallowing patterns were categorized by changes in swallowing cycle phases. The swallowing induced (1) a pause period only in the opening phase (OP type), (2) a pause period only in the closing phase (CL type), (3) pause periods in both closing and opening phases (CL/OP type), (4) no pause period in either the closing or opening phase (Non-influ type), and (5) short opening and closing phases interrupted by a long and stable pause period (P type). Fifty-two% of the swallowings observed were of OP type, 26% of the CL type, 12% of the CL/OP type, and 10% of the others. It is concluded that modulation of the closing velocity in the swallowing cycle was concerned with an inhibition of masseter activity due to sensory input from the periodontal membrane, and that modulation of the opening velocity was concerned with an inhibition of digastric muscle activity due to sensory input from the pharynx.
