Description

Background. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the lung is a rare disease classified as a variant of large cell carcinoma of the lung according to the World Health Organization histologic typing of lung and pleural tumors. Case. A 66-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with an abnormal chest shadow detected on a medical checkup. Chest CT showed a well-defined tumor approximately 40 mm in diameter in the upper lobe of the right lung and swollen anterotracheal lymph nodes. On positron emission tomography, the tumor and the lymph node revealed accumulation of fluorodeoxyglucose. Bronchoscopic brushing cytology revealed non-small cell carcinoma. We preoperatively classified the case as cN2 but at a single station. We performed right upper lobectomy with hilar and mediastinal lymph node dissection. The histopathological diagnosis was LELC, pT2N2M0, stage IIIA. The association with Epstein-Barr virus was not be clarified by EBER1 in situ hybridization. The patient was given 4 courses of combined carboplatin/paclitaxel chemotherapy as adjuvant therapy, and is currently free from the disease at 18 months postoperatively. Conclusion. We report herein a rare case of pulmonary LELC, and reviewed reports.<br>
