Abstract

An attempt was made to describe and classify the morphological characteristics in tumor cells exfoliated from 10 neuroblastomas, 5 pheochromocytomas, 1 adrenocortical carcinomas, 5 adrenocortical adenomas respectively.
Neuroblastoma cells consisted of small, round cells with scant cytoplasma freely separated. Though rosette formation of cells was not rarely observed like as previously reported, the morphologic characteristics of neuroblastoma frequently encountered were found to be indian file pattern of cellular arrangement and also rare occurrence of mitotic cells. Ganglionic cells and neurofiber were exfoliated from neuroblastoma associated with maturation to sympathetic nerve cells.
Cellular features were fairly different with cases of pheochromocytoma, but epithelial-like arrangement of cells was always observed. The latter finding may be possiblly mistaken as the appearance of epithelial tumor. The cytologic features of the other allied tumors were also described.
