Description

Imprint smears of curettage material from the endometrium were studied cytomorphologically in 37 abnormal pregnancies, and syncytiotrophoblasts, cytotrophoblasts, decidual cells and Arias-Stella cells were indentified. Syncytiotrophoblasts were found in 24 cases (88.9%), cytotrophoblast in 4 cases (14.8%), decidual cells in 5 cases (18.5%) and Aria-Stella cells in 2 cases (7.0%) among 27 cases of abortion. Trophoblasts were detected in smears of 7 of 9 cases showing no macroscopic vili. No patients with cyto-or syncytiotrophoblasts, 7 (70%) with decidual cells, and 5 (50.0%) with Arias-Stella cells were observed among 10 ectopic pregnancies.<BR>Several days are required for pathological diagnosis of curettage materials, so combined use of curettage materials contributes to early diagnosis and adequate treatment for the patients.
