Abstract

In order to evaluate the varietal difference of productivity in Italian ryegrass (Lolium muliforum Lam.) at 740m above the sea level, a field test was carried out at experimental field of Shinshu University in 2003. The yields under high frequent cutting (HFC) were compared with those under low frequent cutting (LFC) by using 10 commercial varieties. The cutting times were the vegetative stage when the plant height achieved 25cm in HFC treatment and the heading stage in LFC, respectively. Total yields under LFC were higher than those under HFC in each variety, of which tendency was remarkable in diploid varieties. The yields of diploid varieties decreased with the increase of cutting frequency. In tetraploid varieties, the yields slightly decreased after second time. These results suggested that tetraploid varieties could adapt under frequent cutting at 740m above the sea level.
