Abstract

Colonization of several microbial pathogens like the Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp), Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb), Pasteurella multocida (Pm), and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (App) was examined in piglets of various weaning ages. The piglets, which were produced in a 700-sow farrow-to-finish farm, were moved to barrier-maintained rooms. The earliest weaning ages at which pathogens were isolated are as follows: 10 days for ADV, PRRSV, and Mhp and 17 days for Pm. No App or Bb was isolated. The present study shows that weaning ages for eradication of some pathogens, indicated by the segregated early weaning (SEW) system, are associated with farm hygienic status.
