Abstract
Four abnormally born calves with weakness and irregular bend of the vertebral column, cerebellar hypoplasia, or arthrogryposis of the four legs showed Toxoplasma-like tissue cysts and tachyzoites in the brain, skeletal muscle, or myocardium. Tissue cysts were round to ellipsoidal in shape with a thick cyct wall and contained numerous bradyzoites which were crescent in shape with a marginated nucleus. Formaldehyde-fixed tissue cycts and tachyzoites were subjected to immunohistochemical examinations (ABPC test; Lindsay and Dubey, 1989) using rabbit anti-Toxoplasma gondii, anti-Hammondia hammondi, anti-Neospora caninum, and anti-Sarcosystis crusi sera as primary antibody. Positive reaction was obtained only with anti-N. caninum serum. The present results suggest the occurrence of N. caninum in Japan and its causative role in the development of abnormal delivery in calves.
