Abstract

Investigation showed the average gestation period of 212 Japanese Black calves born in the Miyakonojo Kitamorokata district of Miyazaki Prefecture between January and December 2001 to be 291.2±5.0 days. The calves were sired by five bulls named Yasuhira, Fukuzakura, Teruhagi, Kamihuku, and Shigehuku. Comparisons showed that gestation periods of calves sired by Yasuhira were much longer than those of calves sired by Fukuzakura and Teruhagi. Gestation periods of calves sired by Shigehuku were much longer than those of calves sired by Teruhagi. These results suggest that gestation periods may vary significantly according to sire.
