Abstract

A 2-year-old male shepherd was examined with an abnormal increase in appetite, emaciation, and persistent diarrhea as chief complaints. It had undigested fat and muscle fibers in feces and showed a negative trypsin test, a decrease in blood amylase and cholesterol level, and an increase in GPT. Abnormal results were obtained from fat absorption test and starch and glucose tolerance test. A diagnosis of chronic pancreatic insufficiency was made on this dog. The substitution treatment with pancreatic enzyme preparation had an effect in this case to improve clinical and hematological findings and the nature of feces rapidly and bring about a gradual increase in body weight.
