Description

A 4-year-old, neutered male Maine Coon presented with anorexia and vomiting. Plasma biochemical abnormalities included elevations of urea nitrogen (164 mg/dl) and creatinine (20.5 mg/dl). Abdominal radiographs, ultrasonography and excretory urography findings indicated postrenal acute renal failure due to ureteral obstruction by a mass, and a laparotomy was performed. Because the mass was irremovable, the ureter was dissected from the mass, and the cat was postoperatively treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD). Since the mass was diagnosed as lymphoma in a histopathological examination, steroid therapy was started. The cat showed improved activity and appetite that lasted for a number of weeks, but died on the 67th day. An autopsy revealed lymphoma infiltration in all organs examined, including both kidneys. In the present case, a combination of PD and steroid therapy were effective in maintaining an improved quality of life over a relatively long period. Future challenges are to determine the criteria for PD, its effect on the prognosis and the timing of discontinuation in cats with abdominal lymphoma.
