A hydrozoan Proboscidactyla sp. has a symbiotic association with the tube of Pseudopotamilla occelata. Proboscidactyla sp. can make a complete colony on the worm tube only in association with the worm. The gastrozooid appears on the collar of the worm tube where it maintains close contact with the neck or gill of the worm (Hirai, 1960 and 1969). In February 1969, the young larva of Ps. occelata was obtained from the fertilized egg. The gastrozooid of Pr. sp. was differentiated from the stolon on the collar of the worm tube of the young larva. The gastrozooid was differentiated on the collar of the tube in association with each isolated part of the body of the adult worm respectively with the exception of the gill. The gastrozooid was also differentiated from the stolon piece which was attached on the neck of the trunk of the naked worm. These experiments suggest that the differentiation of the gastrozooid of Pr. sp. has close relation with the body, especially with the secreted substance of the worm of Ps. occelata.
