Abstract

Zoeae of the xanthine crab, Halimede fragifer DE HAAN, were reared in the laboratory from hatching to the second zoeal stage. These two zoeal stages are described and illustrated in dentail and compared with those of related species belonging to the subfamilies Xanthinae and Pilumninae. The zoeae of H. fragifer are different from those of the xanthine crabs reported by previous workers, by the type of antenna II and the setation on the inner lobe of coxal endite of maxilla II. By contrast, with respect to these characters, the zoeae of the pilumnine crabs bear a close resemblance to H. fragifer zoeae. Accordingly, H. fragifer appears to have a closer relationship to the subfamily Pilumninae rather than to the subfamily Xanthinae.
