Abstract

Harvests of Undaria undarioides, cultivated in Tanabe Bay of Wakayama Prefecture at a water surface temperature of 20°C, were achieved 1 month earlier than the natural harvests in early February. We attempted to improve cultivation and harvest within the same year by cultivation during the period where water temperature was high (>20°C ) ; however, a drastic disappearance of sporophytes was encountered. In this study, we conducted cultures inside and outside the net cages at varying water temperatures (22, 21, 20, 18°C) to elucidate the factors affecting the poor growth and early production. Subsequent growth was also compared under the various water temperatures. Cultivation of inside seedlings prevented sporophyte decrease/disappearance, and the harvest size (mean blade length: >35 cm) was established by mid January, even at relatively high water temperatures of >22°C. Therefore, favorably productive cultivation was possible when seedlings were cultivated within net cages, even at high water temperatures. On the contrary, sporophyte outgrowths were observed in outside seedling immediately after the start of cultivation at 21-22°C, followed by sporophyte disappearance at a month after outplanting. This disappearance was probably due to consumption by Siganus fuscescens indicating from predation marks of S. fuscescens and Calotomus japonica.
