Abstract

A male 7-month old hamster was presented with a sudden appearance of a protruding mass from the oral cavity. The hamster was diagnosed as cheek pouch prolapse based on the clinical feature of the inverted left cheek pouch. He was grasping the cheek pouch repeatedly using forelegs to remove it. It seemed to be very difficult to put back the cheek pouch into the original position because it was tremendously edematous. Under inhalation anesthesia, the basal part of the inverted cheek pouch was seized by an ultrasonic surgical apparatus using a probe of short scissors' type, and it was excised instantly after 20 to 30 seconds operation. This surgical treatment required only 5 minutes from the beginning of anesthesia to the end of surgery, and the hamster was able to eat and drink soon after surgical treatment. This is the first report of cheek pouch prolapse in a hamster which was treated using an ultrasonic surgical apparatus.<br>
