Abstract
The purpose of this study is to study the effects of feeding enriched rotifers to juvenile seahorses Hippocampus kuda and the effects of the addition of chlorella to the rearing water in order to improve the survival rate of the juvenile seahorses.
Juveniles were fed fatty acid enriched rotifers reared in the water with chlorella added to it, and non enriched rotifers reared without feeding for a maximum of 60 hours. The survival rates of the juvenile seahorses were compared when these two different groups of rotifers were fed to them.
The juvenile seahorses fed with enriched rotifers and reared in the water with chlorella survived at a rate between 23.3 and 88.3%, while the other juveniles, fed non-enriched rotifers, survived at a rate of 0 to10%.
When juvenile seahorses were given enriched rotifers, fatty acid analysis indicated that C18:2 (n-6) in the organisms was higher than when given non-enriched rotifers after being reared for 108 hours. In addition, n-3HUFAs were 0.55-5.45 mg/g more in the dried juvenile organisms than in those reared with non-enriched rotifers. Juvenile seahorses H. kuda fed enriched rotifers with chlorella added to the rearing water have lower mortality in their early life stages.
