Abstract

To establish a stable and effective production of live-food, the effect of temperature and salinity on the daily population growth rates among 6 strains of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis sp. complex were investigated. The L-type showed positive growth at 15°C, while the SS- and S-types did not. The daily population growth rates increased at higher temperatures and lower salinities among all the 6 strains examined in this study. The highest growth rate of over 300% was observed when the SS- and S-types were cultured under the condition of 20 psu and 30°C, but that of the L-type was below 200%. It was found that high temperature and low salinity conditions were more effective to enhance the population growth of each of the L-type and SS- and S-types, respectively. The findings of this study will be important to determine the specific culture conditions for various strains of rotifer used in the Japanese hatcheries.
